KRL/CRL have been using K’NEX to teach Numeracy, Science and Technology directly to young people across the UK. One of the most popular sessions is a Numeracy day delivered to 5 or 6 classes in KS2/3 a day based around Bridge Building. It lasts an hour per class (but can be expanded to last 1.5 or 2 hours if required). Typical session is as follows:

0.00 Activity - Build a Beam bridge (instructions provided) and test it for strength

0.10 Activity - Convert the Beam bridge into a Warren Truss bridge (instructions provided) and test it for strength

0.15 Discussion on why it’s stronger (triangles used) and why some shapes are stronger than others (angles and two sides supporting instead of one etc)

0.20 Challenge - using triangles strengthen your bridge (no instructions)

0.30 Bridge taken apart

0.35 Challenge - measure a gap of 75cm between two chairs and build a bridge to bridge the gap (no instructions). This challenge will be timed.

0.50 Challenge - work out how much your bridge costs to make on the worksheets

0.55 Take bridge apart and put back in box.

1.00 Session ends

KRL/CRL provide the K'NEX, tape measures, calculators, PowerPoint instructions, worksheets and the tutor. All KRL/CRL tutors are CRB checked and have experience in working in schools. KRL/CRL have many other K’NEX courses that can be delivered to meet the needs of the curriculum and further details are at http://www.karenroutledge.co.uk/knex.html
